Racing

Coming soon to Horsia

Racing is the most expensive and the most uncertain horse market. Most champions are bought as yearlings or as two-year-olds at breeze-up sales, years before anyone knows how good they are. Understanding how the system works is the first step to buying well.

How racing works

Thoroughbreds race on the flat from two years old, over sprints of about 1,000 m to staying races over 3,000 m. Races are graded by class: maidens, handicaps rated by an official body, and stakes or group races (Group or Grade 1, 2 and 3). Winning or placing in these top races is called black type, and it is what multiplies a horse’s value.

What makes a racing champion

What surprises newcomers

Fast breeze-up times raise prices a lot, but our own studies show that the time alone says little about future racing success. And costs run on: training, vets, entries and transport add up every month, whether the horse wins or not.

What Horsia will measure

Horsia is building its racing analysis: a stride meter that measures stride frequency and length from breeze videos, combined with pedigree and real sale data. We will open it once it proves useful against real racing results. Join the waiting list to hear first.
